Freedom isn’t free!  In grateful acknowledgement of our nation’s armed forces, Credit Union West continues a 55-year tradition of support for our troops.  Working with base leadership, the credit union underwrites important programs at Luke Air Force Base. In 2006 those programs included:

  • Sponsorship of the Airman Against Drunk Driving initiative entitled Call a Wingman.

  • Operation Thunder Box, which gathered and shipped personal care and comfort items to Luke’s deployed forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.

  • Operation Warm Heart, which provides for the families of deployed troops, especially during the holidays.

  • Local and regional advocacy for the elimination of predatory lending targeted towards the military.

  • Monthly financial fitness briefings for newcomers to the base, developing leaders, and dependents. With squadron commanders and Family Support Center, we are equipping young Airman to avoid the debt traps of high interest loans, and excessive use of credit.

Supporting Education

Our collaboration with local and district-level educators throughout Maricopa County resulted in increased financial literacy for our youth as they learned more about the importance of saving.  Financial education programs were conducted via classroom presentations and financial education workshops.

With Rotary International and Soroptimist International we developed a Vocational-Technical scholarship program, which created $9,000 in scholarships for the first year. With local Hispanic community leaders, we funded a scholarship for the Aguila Youth Leadership Institute.  This is a readiness program that prepares Hispanic high school students to move forward with their formal education, to become community leaders in the future.

Other Community Involvement

Credit Union West also supported a number of programs for the West Valley Child Crisis Center, Eve’s Place Domestic Violence Shelter, Shop with a Cop, the Air Force Association, Hispanic Leadership Forum, New Life Center, Glendale Community Foundation, and local Chambers of Commerce.

The effect of these philanthropic efforts is exponential when the credit union’s resources are deployed in support of existing programming in our cities, schools and region.  Even with minimal expenditures, the credit union creates big benefits as we engage our members, employees and community in programs that enhance the quality of life in the Valley.
